Homosexual Water Crisis of the Day: During the launch of a project that was designed to give the residents of the Peruvian town of Huarmey better water access, the mayor, Jose Benitez, raised concerns that the town’s water could turn the residents gay.
Benitez seems to be basing his claim on two main factors: The water contains high levels of the chemical strontium, and it comes from the nearby town of Tabalosos.
Tabalosos was the subject of a TV report that aired in 2000, which claimed that all 14,000 male inhabitants of the town were homosexual.
As for the strontium, Benitez stated:
Unfortunately strontium reduces male hormones and suddenly we’ll be as Tabalosos, as other towns, where the percentages are increasing of homosexuality.
Dr. Robert Castro, the dean of the College of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Lima went on Peruvian radio to dismiss the claims made by Benitez. Castro said that large amounts of strontium can cause cancer, anemia, and cardiovascular complications, but will not turn anyone gay.
